The 488 ushered in the dawn of a new era for Ferrari as the first in a long line of mid-engined V8 sports cars to feature a turbocharged V8 unit.

It was a brave move from the marque to come away from the naturally aspirated V8’s they had become synonymous with after being at the heart of some of their most iconic models of the last 50 years, but Ferrari have always set the pace amongst their peers and they foresaw the direction the future was heading in.

Not only can you produce significant power hikes from a turbocharged unit, you can also greatly increase the efficiency of the car whilst reducing emissions and carbon footprint, the trick is to do this without compromising the driver experience that you would come to expect from a Ferrari.

This new turbocharged engine would go on to win the “International engine of the year award” four consecutive years in a row, an accolade never achieved by any manufacturer previously or since.

The combination of this engine and the sublime chassis and drivetrain of the 488 would see the model go on to be one of the brands most successful in its history.
