2018 McLaren 720S
Information

Few manufacturers have established the racing pedigree of McLaren, from the vision of founder Bruce McLaren to their dominance in Formula 1 and the creation of some of the most technically advanced road cars ever produced, McLaren has always been defined by one thing…. engineering without compromise.

The 720S is arguably one of the most significant products of that philosophy. Launched in 2017 as the successor to the 650S, the 720S was more than simply an evolution of McLaren's existing Super Series. It represented a major step change in design, engineering and performance, and established McLaren as one of the most serious players in the modern supercar market.

Revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the 720S replaced the 650S and immediately looked unlike anything else in McLaren's range.

Its design was dramatically different, with an almost teardrop-shaped body and the distinctive 'eye socket' headlights incorporating aerodynamic air channels… this was a car that’s body had been designed around the movement of air.

As a result the 720S looked futuristic but was also highly functional. McLaren describes the design philosophy as "everything for a reason", the bodyworks intakes and aerodynamic surfaces all contributing to the car's performance.

The name “720S” referred directly to its headline power output of 720 PS, equivalent to 710 bhp produced by McLaren's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, internally known as the M840T. It produced 770 Nm of torque and drove the rear wheels through McLaren's seven-speed Seamless Shift Gearbox.

The numbers were extraordinary.

The 720S could accelerate from 0–62 mph in around 2.9 seconds and reach 124 mph in just 7.8 seconds.

The significance of the 720S is perhaps best understood by looking at where it sits in McLaren's history. The 12C established McLaren Automotive as a genuine manufacturer of modern supercars. The 650S refined that formula. The 720S, however, demonstrated that McLaren could go head-to-head with the very best Ferrari and Lamborghini had to offer,  and in many respects, exceed them.

EVO – “Precision is, for me, the 720’s defining characteristic, but by no means its only one. Completely absorbing, frighteningly intense, life-affirming, but not inherently scary – everything the car does is defined by absolute precision.”

TOP GEAR - “Probably the single most accomplished supercar we’ve ever driven.”
